Places to Stay in Carcassonne

carcassonneCarcassonne is the department of the Aude. There is so much to see at both the famous fortified medieval town la Cité and the town below known as the Bastide. la Cité was restored in the 19th century has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997. It is a filled with narrow cobbled street, cafes and little shops and the beautiful Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse church. La Cité plays host to regular jousting and falconry displays, concerts and theatre performances at the place_carnot_colouramphitheatre. For me the best time of day to visit is in the evening when most of the visitors have left for the day and you can wander round the fortress imagining how it was to live there hundreds of years ago.

The Bastide is built in a grid system of narrow streets fabulous for those who like to explore. You will find the city’s Musée des Beaux Arts, interesting little churches, plenty of shops and of course Place Carnot with its central fountain and surrounded with cafes and restaurants and filled with the bustling market on Saturdays.

Rue de Pont Vieux 34_rue_de_Pont_Vieux

34 rue de Pont Vieux  is situated within the medieval Labyrinth  of alleys and small streets beneath the Cite ramparts in the picturesque Trivalle district. The area is under the jurisdiction of the Architects  for the Historic Monuments of France who impose strict building controls to maintain the historic nature of the area. The house is therefore renovated to a very high standard in keeping with its historic surroundings. The first floor accommodation consists of two large double bedrooms, one with en suite shower room with double and single bed. Plus a separate family bathroom. Leading off the first floor landing is the entrance to the roof terrace. This covered area has open front and sides giving fabulous views of the historic Cite of Carcassonne and its Ramparts.  It  provides essential shade in the summer and protection in the winter to allow year round usage.
