Places to Stay in Carcassonne
Carcassonne is the department of the Aude. There is so much to see at both the famous fortified medieval town la Cité and the town below known as the Bastide. la Cité was restored in the 19th century has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1997. It is a filled with narrow cobbled street, cafes and little shops and the beautiful Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse church. La Cité plays host to regular jousting and falconry displays, concerts and theatre performances at the
amphitheatre. For me the best time of day to visit is in the evening when most of the visitors have left for the day and you can wander round the fortress imagining how it was to live there hundreds of years ago.
The Bastide is built in a grid system of narrow streets fabulous for those who like to explore. You will find the city’s Musée des Beaux Arts, interesting little churches, plenty of shops and of course Place Carnot with its central fountain and surrounded with cafes and restaurants and filled with the bustling market on Saturdays.
