Stage 3
Wines by Region
Argentina

Argentina is the worlds 5th largest wine producing country in the world. With an eye on export markets the quality of the wine is improving and Argentina is now one of the most dynamic wine producers in the world.

The most important region is around the city of Mendoza, which is on the far west of the country and across the Andes from Santiago in Chile. The vineyards are planted at altitude and the climate here is continental with clearly defined seasons and no extremes in temperature. There is ample water for irrigation from the Andes. The most important grape variety in Argentina a Malbec which traditionally was aged in oak for long periods and produced wines which were meaty and leathery. Now modern styles are being produced which are much more fruity. The most popular whiter grape is Torrontes, which if handled with care can produce some interesting wines. Plantings of Chardonnay are increasing especially at high altitude and produce wines with intense flavours.
