The harvest has begun here in the Languedoc and the little villages are a hive of activity with tractors buzzing through the streets bringing fruit to the caves where the alchemy will begin! Yesterday I went to Clos du Gravillas in Saint-Jean-De-Minervois and helped John and Nicole harvest the Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, the main grapes for that fabulous dry white L'Inattendu. We started picking at 8 in the morning and it took us 4 hours to get it all picked. The fruit was beautiful, ripe and tasty and each vine had yielded 4 or 5 wonderful bunches. We got it back to the winery and immediately put it into the press where we foot stomped it first before the pressing began.
Borie du Maurel have not started their harvest yet. The vines here are planted very high at over 300 meters and therefore they have a longer growing period. However the harvest is early for most regions in France this year and Borie du Maurel will start harvesting very soon
Emmanuel Puy has also began his harvest and I for one am waiting with baited breathy to see if this years vintage will produce Cuvée 7 that fabulous, brooding red that he only makes when the harvest is excellent. Those of you who tasted it in the barrel will be pleased to know that the 2007 is now bottled and if you have ordered some it will be with you in October.
